Oof, good luck to them. What they’re trying to build is not easy. If I were a gambler I would definitely bet against that thing ever seeing the light of day.
Interesting, and the prices don’t look that bad. I’d wait until they actually were out in the market and see how well it actually worked before I’d ever buy one.
Neither do I. The form factor is too limiting for the 3D and CNC use cases and there’s no way I want the debris my CNCs create to be anywhere near the optics of a laser.
“I did a deep dirty on my laser and now it doesn’t work.”
Agreed. To me the only thing that maybe might make sense is a laser/pen plotter/printer because I don’t think the two technologies will actively undermine each other. (As much.)
Even then I think you’re better off with two devices. Anyone who has a printer knows they are just looking for a reason to stop working.
I used to agree with you, until I switched from HP. I had been a loyal consumer for years, thinking I was buying good quality. No, I was subscribing to their ink-dependance addiction.
I’ll never buy another HP product, and my current printer (Epson ECO-tank) works every time I need it.
I have a Dell color laser printer. It’s pretty reliable. I won’t go back to inkjet.
That said it doesn’t wake up to network calls anymore, I have to power cycle it to wake it up. It’s showing some signs that it’ll die eventually. Dell quit making printers ages ago and there hasn’t been a firmware update in probably ten years.
This is when finding one used is a life saver. That, along with ~$20 off brand cartridges has made my colour laser my cheapest printer…and the “ink” never dries out!
My plan was to get an ecotank when my original cartridges ran out, but then searching online I was gobsmacked to find such cheap replacements (and they work just like the originals!)
I think I got the printer for about $300 at the time. It was maybe 15 years ago? The cost per page is pretty low. I buy third party toner and almost never have to replace it. I think I’ve been using these current toner cartridges for at least 5 years; I don’t print much.
That’s the big thing for me. I can ignore it for a year and when I need it to print it just works. Every inkjet I had would dry up and the head would clog — simply not an issue with toner. It was cheaper for me to buy the laser printer once instead of junking an inkjet every couple years.
Yeah I once found a color laser for free on craigslist. I needed it when I was living in a different city for a few months. I grabbed it for free, used it while I was there, then listed it for free when I was moving back home.
I have an HP ColorJet laser printer that I bought probably 8-10 years ago. Still works perfectly. I think I’ve replaced the cartridges only once or twice, and the last time was about 2 years ago. I think I use it for scanning more than printing.
I’ve got two old canons. 600s of some sort. 610N and don’t recall the other. Think one had toner issues(cheap cartridge). The other I think the fuser was shot. I used to print a lot. Sailed the high seas with book pdfs.
