New project… I started playing with veneer, since I have a bunch of it from old pre-glowforge projects. I was playing with a simple dyed black veneer and got the idea of doing a small tansu style deck box.
The box is black veneer over padauk wood. The thin veneer is pretty delicate on its own, but glued down and with a few coats of shellac, it seems pretty stable.
The box is a standard finger joint box, but the joints are behind the veneer.
The nice thing on that one is the burned edge and smoke with the yellow veneer kind of add to the design. I just could not get the seams on the corners to a happy spot. Cut long and sand next time.
Yes. It’s just a yellow dyed veneer. The smoke from the laser gives it a kind of orange tint in spots. Woodcraft, Rockler and Highland Woodworking all carry packs of dyed veneer. I have black, yellow and red, but there are lots of colors available.
One thing I totally forgot to mention with veneer: It’s a good idea to leave a small gap on either side of the outer cut for your pieces (Note the blue line with a gap at the top and bottom).
If you don’t, when they come loose they tend to get blown around by the air assist fan and inevitably end up right in the path of your next cut.
You can just nip the last little bit with an exacto knife.
