The wings we lack

I love making automata. Even the simple ones (perhaps especially the simple ones) just draw me in with their kinetic magic. As a horse owner, if the automata is a horse, then I’m all in.

So, this creation is one I’ve refactored a number of times over the last several years. Previously, it was hand cranked, but I wanted a version that requires only a button press so that I can stand back and fully appreciate the motion.

The horse’s body and legs were cut on my CNC machine, but the acrylic and some of the thinner wood elements are done on the glowforge. It uses a 12 volt gearmotor wired to a L298N motor driver and an Arduino Uno.

And it embodies the equestrian saying: “Horses lend us the wings we lack.”

I absolutely love this! This is awesome. I love the use of clear acrylic for the moving braces, it really gives it that “free moving” look. Great job! Thank you for sharing this.

That’s beautiful! I can see why you want to see it moving freely.

By any chance is this the Arduino holder?

Yes, it is! Gotta love Thingiverse and 3D printers. I did a fair number of utility prints with this project.

Just shows that some elements are pure luck. I didn’t know that the gear train I created was going to produce that sound!
