… then I would leave it as-is until you can get access to something appropriate. I would not put WD-40 or anything else on it, it’s been that way for a while, it won’t get worse in the short term.

That is true, keep it dry though.

I’ll also recommend Evapo-rust because it will remove only the rust.
They also make a rust inhibitor product.
There are other options, products that are applied to the object and others that are stored in an enclosed space with the product.
Here’s a link that provides a good assortment. I’ve posted links to Lee Valley Tools (LVT) before so I should say I have no affiliation other than being a very satisfied customer for around 40 years. Because I’m familiar with the LVT site I recognize when they have something appropriate. Other companies such as Rockler and Woodcraft in the USA, Busy Bee in Canada, and Axminster in the UK, to name just a few, will have some of the same or similar products.
