Unexplained Doubling During Engrave

Does anyone know a reason this might be happening on my prints? I am running the Gift of Good Measure on Medium Proofgrade Draftboard and for some reason on the engraves it has this doubling effect. I am only running one pass and it isn’t consistent throughout the whole design, so I am genuinely perplexed as to why this might be.

I have just cleaned every lens in the laser head and replaced the crumb tray (unrelated to this issue) and can confirm everything is/was in the right place.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Hmm… What I would first do is reset the design and try again.

Steps to reset the design:

Go to your dashboard. Find the Gift of Good Measure design and open it. Toward the right side of the screen you should see a button that says “Reset design.” It will look something like this (here is a screenshot of part of my screen and you can see the button at the bottom of the image).

After you reset the design, check the left side of the screen to make sure it doesn’t have the engrave step listed twice. Then try printing it again. Come back and show us if it does the same thing again!

I can confirm it happens even if the design has been reset. And no, I’m only engraving once.

It also happened on a print where I just printed the word “test” on a rectangle. Neglected to include that on the original post. My bad.

Sounds like a physical issue.

I’d turn off the machine and inspect the rails, pulleys, belts, and wheels. I bet you’ll find debris/damage in one or more of the components.

Once you’ve inspected and cleaned your rails then I’d move the laser head and arm through the full range of motion. I’d be looking for anything that feels rough or like it’s catching.

I once had an issue where a screw was not fully seated on the rail and the laser head would just barely brush it. Just enough to cause subtle issues with the print.

Closely inspect the carriage plate wheels for cracks or debris. Also, check the carriage plate belt. This appears to me to be a problem with the tension of the carriage plate belt. Did you recently remove the carriage plate by loosening the tension pulley?

I’ve cleaned everything to the best of my ability and am still getting the doubling.

I don’t doubt that there is truth to your proposed solution. I may just be out of my depth here. Asking some coworkers to look at it for me in the coming days to see if they catch something I’m not.

Cracked wheels and pulleys can sometimes be hard to see, a flashlight can help.

The next step after inspecting for damage is probably to talk to Glowforge support. :frowning:
