Unglazed tile - darken engraved area?

I bought unglazed tiles to make coaters and plan to engrave them. I have read other posts here that state that paint will seep into the surrounding absorbent tile and the recommendation was to clear coat the tile before engraving. I feel like this would ruin the absorptive properties of the coaster, allowing liquid to run right off. Is there another way to darken the engrave on an unglazed tile? Thank you!

Cermark says it works on unglazed ceramic. The marked area may become non-porous though.
