Wasting material on pictures

Any help please? I use Gimp for photo’s and can never seem to get them correct turning to black and white, etc. They always come out looking like…, and tired of waisting money on pg material. Anybody help with converting this picture for me? I’m looking to make and 8 x 10 picture of grandparents. Thanks everyone.

The thing with photos is that it should look terrible in your graphics program, for it to look good in your laser - which is hard!
I don’t have access to a good program where I am, but this might get you started.

Also, once you get your art right, I strongly suggest this double method for printing:

I agree with everything @deirdrebeth said above.

The stark differences in shades in that photo are going to make it really hard to look good when engraved. You really want gentle variances when trying to engrave a photo and almost no background to distract.

Thank you for the help, losing hair over how much pg material I waisted on this picture trying to get ‘something right’. I don’t do much pictures but maybe something to look into, thanks for the help and info.
