I am trying to engrave plain straight lines. The laser moves back and forth for a long while and does not create any lines. Then, finally, almost at the end of the timer running, it does engrave what it is supposed to do. Why does it work on nothing for a long time? The file is not complicated and should take about 8 minutes in total, but the timer counts 35 minutes, and for about 20+ minutes nothing gets cut or engraved

Check your settings for your individual steps. It is possible, if you have more than one step, that the first step (or steps) may be set to a power too low to actually make a mark, while the later or final steps are set properly. It is possible to set an engrave or cut or score to 0 power.

Can you show your file? Is the “line” you are engraving a filled shaped or a path. The Glowforge will not engrave a path. If you share a screenshot of your file on the interface and the side panel showing the operations, we can probably help.
