Wooden Rings

I think you’d have to design a different file for acrylic. The fit of the bezel down onto the ring itself alone could be problematic.

And, if you mean by this adding a ‘gem’ to acrylic, I’ve not be successful in getting resin to stick to acrylic.

Haha! MY stuff on the other hand can scream cheap even sooner than that!

Have you tried Gel CA?

I have had decent results using that to bond decorative acrylic pieces to many materials, from metal to “plastic” to wood and, of course, acrylic. Takes a lot of practice to know how much to use - for small pieces I used a toothpick to get “just enough” so that it would cover the mating area without spewing out the sides. I had weld-on (?) for structural stuff, as CA has virtually no tensile strength.

No, I was thinking more of this piece that the jewel sits on:

Yes, I have….thanks. Not sure we’re talking about the same thing though. I was referring to working UV resin directly on a piece of acrylic and setting it with a UV light. Seems I’ve tried it and it doesn’t stick.

Ah yes…that’s the bezel. Yes, you could make that piece in acrylic.

Yeah, most resins won’t stick directly to acrylic but perhaps if you made the resin parts on, say, a silicon mat, you could then use Gel CA to attach them?

Yes…that’s cool! I just recently discovered that. I had read that resin doesn’t stick to silicon, so I made a separate gem to test it out. It was fun. Also, I have found out that if my resin work doesn’t go as expected, I can just pry it off and start over without having to trash the whole ring.

you could cut apart a credit card and put the small chip in the epoxy for quick payment

Now, THAT would be brilliant!!!

Edit - alas, seems there is also a fine copper wire antenna that is destroyed by the process of trying to dissolve the plastic away. Also would be much larger than a jewel on a ring with that antenna..

Wow! I love that you re-created the same ring! Kind of awesome!

I hope they accept the design.

I finally got around to actually making your rings - I love the design, SO much customization possible

I did find out that my thick is thicker than expected, so I had to widen the openings on the base and support box.

…and then because I wanted to see what it looks like I cut the bezel out of the same thick material. I think it looks pretty wild just out of wood, I can’t wait to finish the decorating!

I will say, getting the top in is hard! I totally broke the first ring after adjusting my holding points and putting pressure on the back of the ring (doh! You warned me!). It does pop in there very solidly without breaking the edges at all, but WOW does it feel like it won’t fit :stuck_out_tongue: I’m betting if I thought about it and flipped it over it may have slid in more easily…I’ll have to try that on my next iteration, but first - filling in the bezel and then rub’n’buff!

It pleases me immensely to hear about your experience and to hear you say how much you like them. Thank you for that!

It sure IS hard to get the top on. I was worried about that…sending it out into the world, but I figured if I could do it, it could be done….and you just proved that.

Now, comes the fun part…..blinging it out!

I’m taking pictures as it goes - I’ll post them when I’m all finished

I’m all finished, and I love it - my terrible faux-resin stone aside

I used clear school glue as I had it, when I do another one I’ll dig out actual resin which doesn’t shrink when it dries necessitating multiple layers.

The last picture is just the print of Picasso’s Don Quixote on paper at the bottom, and then going up is with the layers of clear glue.

The gold and silver are Rub’n’Buff wax which is fabulous stuff.

If I were still doing theatrical costumes a lot of my rich/royal characters would have more jewelry with this method! It’s so shiny!

I will say the bonus of the glue is that it never gets truly hard, so damage is really unlikely!

Thank you again @Xabbess :revolving_hearts:

Thank YOU again, @deirdrebeth for showing me the progress and final result. I love that you put that tiny print on it. I’m pretty sure you are the one that turned me on to Rub n’ Buff a long time ago….and I think it’s marvelous….it’s such a rich and real looking finish.

And these wooden rings are so comfortable, don’t you think? I’ve given several away, including to my daughter who is on a farm…complete with all the work involved. I told her….just wear it…it’s OK. It will probably break eventually, but that’s the beauty….I can make another.

They really are very comfortable! Especially considering how wide it is I barely feel it, and of course it weighs almost nothing.

So much bling for your buck! :ring:
