When I was growing up we hung stockings on St. Nicholas Day (12/6), and put up the tree sometime between then and the 25th. Now that it’s my house I tend to set it up anytime after Turkey day - mostly because I adore having a room lit by twinkling lights 
I’ve seen so many people who think the 12th day is 12/25 rather than 1/6!
