I don’t have the photos on this phone, but we explored an abandoned hotel last summer, it was overrun with them. I took a picture with one that was larger than my hand, and that wasn’t the largest.
@CMadok and @evansd2 - I would’ve just had a heart attack.
We have a lot of wolf spiders and they totally freak me out. I don’t even like Daddy Longlegs, even though I know they’re harmless. I think part of my fear of spiders stems from when I was 4 or 5 and my brother had me hold my hand out while a Daddy Longlegs crawled over my hand. The feel of those legs crawling over my hand was terrifying to me. And they move so fast! When we lived in NE Nevada, we had a ton of DLLs, and it never failed that when I’d get in the shower, three of them would come from opposite corners of the bathroom and convene over the shower. I swore they had a convention to see which would drop down on me. I’d actually wake my husband up if he was in bed, to come kill them. I was even late to work one day because two spiders decided to hold a duel right above my closet door and I was afraid to open it - again, they were fighting to see which one got to drop on me. (Yeah, I doubt they actually drop on people, but that’s the way my mind works.)
And in a little town called Gabbs, NV, they have a tarantula migration, and the ground will be covered by thousands of them. Horrible when you’re driving through. We had friends who lived there, and made sure not to go when the spiders were migrating.
OK not to make this terrible for the arachnophobes, but the sheer number of spiders (specifically wolf spiders, i.e. the family Lycosidae, of which there are 2500+ known species) is probably higher than you think.
Fun exercise:
- Go outside at night with a flashlight.
- Hold it near your eyes and look down at your lawn.
- Notice lots of little reflections in the grass.
- Pick one such reflection and bend down to look at it, keeping the flashlight near your eyes.
- You’ll probably find a wolf spider. If not, pick the next reflection. I’ve never had to look a third time.
- Step back and try to count the reflections.
- Get about ten seconds into the process and decide to run inside.

“But”, you think to yourself, “I don’t have wolf spiders where I live. I’m good.”
Sadly, you are not. Green represents Lycosidae range. Unless you live in places like sub-Saharan Africa or the Himalayas or parts of the Andes or Greenland… you have wolf spiders:

Don’t worry though, my Tibetan friends, you have the Himalayan Jumping Spider to keep you warm. TBH they’re kinda cute.
I see them here regularly, but they’re at max about 1/2" long. Teeny tiny wolves. Wolfettes really ![]()
I don’t have a parrot, but my caregiver’s daughter got one recently, and I designed it for her birthday. I’ll post a pic or video if they can get the bird to use it.
This is just like you. ![]()
There are other bird showers on makerspace, but what fun is that? The aquarium pump was less than $7, a couple hours and iterations in Fusion, and some plastic melted into place by the 3D printing magic fairies, and Voila! I had to see if I could make my own, and this one was super fun as it actually works! Who knew that pet birds need their own shower?
I had to scroll past all these spider posts. I want to see 3D prints, not get creeped out! ![]()
@ellencadwell you said your husband cut his arm? Is he ok?
@pubultrastar A parrot shower? This is adorable - do you have a parrot and I just missed seeing that before? I want to see a parrot showering in this. ![]()
Nope, nope, nope - not gonna go out at night looking for them. I can’t even bring myself to watch the video you posted, or look at the Himalayan Jumping Spider!
It’s bad enough I had to scrape a large web off my clothesline this morning before I could hang laundry today! And it was going to be a big one like out in the woods. Totally freaked me out!
@pubultrastar - that’s really sweet of you to make the shower for your caregiver’s daughter. ![]()
@trually - yeah, hubby is okay. It’s not as bad as the ones he usually gets! But the caps will help prevent that. At least it won’t be metal he catches his arm on (or me either when I go out there).
After about a year of just searching, downloading and printing 3D items, my first incursion into creating something after having learned Shap3r3D was this simple soap dish strainer.
Good job! Like the style of it.
That’s another thing I still have to learn - Shapr3D. I have the free TinkerCad and Fusion 360, but did download Shapr3D also. I always forget to look at that one for some reason.
Thanks @ellencadwell, simple is better.
Shap3r 3D is very intuitive and easy to learn and use, and free to use, except once you finish your design you can only export in blocky low resolution. However, to export at high resolution or other formats you need to pay a subscription, or get a free 1 year renewable education license for faculty, staff or students of acredited learning institutions. (a .edu email account will do it, my 40 year old email account from my Alma Matter in México was good enough).
Our yard is full of these! We name them and call them the web development team. ![]()
We live in harmony, aside from the fact that we don’t go out back without a flashlight after dark, as walking through a web can be, well, disturbing.
I wanted to give a little shout out to Darkmoon build plates as I recently upgraded both of my Bambu printers to their build plates. Previously I was using the Bamboo PEI textured plates almost exclusively and as long as I would wipe them down in between each use with isopropyl alcohol, I would generally get good adhesion. After doing some research on build plates, I settled on Dark Moon satin build plates and I will tell you that I have not had any print failures since upgrading and it seriously sticks. Just a warning that they are pricier than other bill plates, but I don’t have any regrets upgrading my X1-C and H2S. Just thought I’d share.
I have been experimenting with some different fibers and found one that turned out pretty good. I am really new to the 3d printers and didn’t know what to expect. These are a couple of Halloween prints that I made. I got the prints from maker world.
I’ll make a note on this plate. Thank you. I’m still in love with the textured plate, but never know for the future.
@davidgal2 That filament looks beautiful!
Followed the link and was surprised to see $79.00, until I remembered I’m in Canada and the price was in CAD. Oops.
Aha! I’ve been wondering how all those knitted-texture animal models on Maker World were created…
