Alternative to pass-through

The issue @eflyguy was pointing out wasn’t a mismatch in sections (that seems to generally work) but the first pass of the head on the new section’s engrave does not power the laser. That leaves a line that is not engraved in between sections. That line shows as a ridge of unengraved material. The lower the LPI setting the thicker the line.

I read it and am aware. I was providing counter point to @evansd2 assertion of passthru being vaporware due to mechanical lineup limitations.

And yet it is vaporware because they simply cannot correct for rotation even if they get position accurate to within 1/1355th of an inch (highest resolution of lpi) — which they cannot, if we are to believe the 0.001” accuracy claims.

The engraving direction is horizontal. There’s no fixing that.

Can it get pretty good? Undoubtedly. Can it be perfect? Absolutely not. I’m just not Interested in making designs that will have visible flaws in the engraving, So I design around it.

Perfect passthrough performance is vaporware pure and simple. They are just too many variables for Glowforge to guarantee that. It’s important to understand the limitations like not being able to use the last inch and a half to the right of the bed, and other obviously incorrect claims that Glowforge puts in their marketing text. When the performance is good, it’s very good, but it’s definitely not perfect.

These are 3 identical big engrave passthrough pieces i did a few years ago. Each has the weird first line thing after each move (2 moves so 2 lines) but still made the client happy. Perfect is not always needed.

Mine is. Both my original machine, and the replacement. It’s accurate to a single pass at 400-450 dpi. I took some pics but can’t find them, I’ll try to reproduce as I have a large cut job scheduled, but it wouldn’t hurt to throw a little engrave on a scrap area.

I also posted video of it simply not firing on that first pass back in the day when passthru was introduced, when support was engaged with us.

Just took two pics. The Saturn 5 was 4 steps, two skips are here but very hard to see in the pic - I touched them up with a pencil. The Chrysler bldg ones I left alone, as a reminder…
