Is this possible or too risky? Anyone have any advice on what I should look material wise for when I cut carpet squares

As with any material, the big thing is PVC. No PVC.

As @evansd2 mentioned, be very careful, as even small amounts of vinyl can destroy your GF’s electronics.
You may want to take a peek at this page:
Two of the three backings contain PVC/vinyl, so should be avoided at all cost.
