Nice article. But the author does take pains to point out that it’s the chlorine in the chemical PVC (polyVinyl Chloride) that causes the problems. Other vinyl containing chemicals, such as PVAc and PVAl and EVA are as laser safe as wood products.

It is always the right thing to check what kind of plastic you’ve got if vinyl is in the chemical name. If you’ve got something just called ‘vinyl’, then don’t laser it. PVA and EVA are never called ‘vinyl’.

It’s not the vinyl, it’s the chlorine. In chemistry vinyl denotes a double bonded carbon group. EVA (it’s a foam often used in costume making) is fine to cut, cuts great in fact. Not sure what that resin is. If memory serves the main hazards with resins are Hydrogen Cyanide and HCl.

Ok, so in reading this thread…

  1. cutting vinyl records will cause my Glowforge to disintegrate and will turn me into Deadpool
  2. PVC is not EVA. EVA is ‘safe enough’ to laser – but these things are only 31% EVA…
  3. No one commented on what K-Resin is but I looked it up… and I’m not seeing a yes, but I’m not seeing a no… but the MSDS seems to indicate it IS laserable. …
