He he. (But seriously, yeah, I couldn’t paint grain that well. It was made of actual photos of wood veneer in natural colors. I still think it’s real every time I look at it.)
I carved a fish from Lapis and mounted it on a piece of precious coral. Both materials were flawless blue and red so folks just assumed they were plastic.
This is why I decided there has to be a 3-d component to any of the mosaics I’m doing. Because if it’s totally flat, then it may as well just be a giclée print.
I love texture–bold and subtle, as appropriate to the piece. I love being drawn in from a distance, then finding myself inches away trying to see all the details. Evidence of the human touch makes art more compelling to me.
