0.55 times the width compares to the missing area? plus the side to side differences?
The one square area is 0.25 in^2. ID width of the frame is 4.5 inches. Area missing for seven-piece assembly is (5.000-4.945 ) X 4.500 = 0.055 X 4.500 = 0.2475 in^2. Not sure why it’s not exactly 0.25 in^2. Maybe the parts weren’t snapped together on the drawing. But that 0.055 inch gap height across the width of the frame should be the area of the missing square piece.
That was not at all helpful in scratching said itchiness.
Some of the gaps in the photos are due to warped Baltic birch, especially on part #1. I’ve tried two suppliers but both use Russian sources apparently.
If you’ve made the bevel specifically for one choice of the number of missing pieces, say two, and if you put a grid on the pieces, the grid lines can line up perfectly for the ten-piece and the eight-piece assemblies. However the grid lines will mismatch for the nine and seven-piece assemblies even though they fit in the frame. This could give the non-gridded pieces an advantage in mystifying.
