You can leave the film on if you’re only cutting. Engraving will get messy with it. The sticky residue is just part of cutting plastic/acrylic with a laser-the laser vaporizes the material and some of it will deposit on the sheet. Leaving the film on will help, or you can just wipe with a wet paper towel after. And the smell is bad, but also just part of cutting acrylic with a laser unfortunately🤷‍♂️

Just wiping it off doesn’t work - I had to emerge them in alcohol to remove the residue.

Usually true, but this particular product is different. According to the manufacturer, you should leave the film on for cutting. Personally, I’ve cut this same product both with and without the film, didn’t notice a difference in the smell, and it made cleanup after easier. Cutting it without the masking, there was a fair bit of sticky residue that cleaned off with a warm wet paper towel. Cut with the film, it was easy to peel the film off after, leaving a nice clean surface.
