thanks for the input. I will experiment with that tomorrow. with the wedding. we didn’t even do Christmas presents this year yet. it was nuts leading up to the wedding. 
I have some of that particular “thread” already luckily.

Your post is an excellent snapshot of what’s needed - not just the answer to “how big a hole” but thread size & source, hole size and spacing. Great answer for the question and a nice resource for folks just starting their leather stitching efforts.
