They look sooo elegant. Do you find that scoring takes on more light than engraving. I did a engraved sea scape & found it only lit the bottom half. I still have a lot to learn … but loving it.
Very pretty! How tall?
If you manipulate the image so the engrave is darkest at the top and lightest at the bottom and then do a very power engrave you can get more even lighting all the way up. The lighter parts will be shallower and the darker will be deeper. More of the light coming from the bottom of the acrylic will make it to the top because the shallower engraved part won’t diffuse it as much.
You’ll want to experiment some to get the results you want but it is possible to get it evenly lit along the entire height.
I used a combination of engraving and scores on these sailboats. Anything that I wanted super crisp was a score. The engraving takes much longer, but I feel the combination is worth it.
8" up to 14", plus the base.
these are great. always love edge lit
I’ve never done the backlit stuff. I’ve never bought the bases to do it. ![]()
You can do it in other ways as well. U-channel can be used as a picture frame. Lay a strip of led lighting in it and bring the power wires out the bottom or back to the power supply (maybe create a wooden base so you can stand it up and use that for hiding the power wires too). Then you get even lighting all around the engrave too. You can get the u-channel at big box stores or even repurpose craft store picture frames. The led strips are all over Amazon and you can cut them to length.
The bases are so convenient and cheap, it’s not worth messing with making one unless the regular bases aren’t suitable. I even took one apart to use the inner components, rather than assembling something from scratch - and I’m an EE.
Thanks @jamesdhatch, @eflyguy, and @pubultrastar!
