My philosophy is buy the best you can afford. You’ll rarely regret getting more than you need, but always regret not having as much as you need down the road.

I divide based on “consumables”. If I will be replacing a lot, I will likely try the cheaper version. If I will/can never purchase another I will spring for the best. There are exceptions, and ugly used car with good running gear will likely be consumable anyway. With materials I found long ago that a gold ring and a silver ring will take the same amount of work but at the time the finished ring would sell for 10 times the cost of the materials, so the more expensive material paid more for the same amount of work. So for the Glowforge I have this dual approach, the cheapest possible that works for experimental work, but quite a bit of really nice species for if I can find the market for it.
