Score Text from Illustrator

Hey Community! I am trying to score some text onto leather and having issues. I’m new-ish to Illustrator and every time I bring over a .SVG file and select “score” it wants to make an outline of the text image instead of a solid line.

Any ideas on what I’m doing wrong or how to fix it?!

That’s what “score” means. It’s basically a cut that doesn’t go all the way through. If you want the text image filled in, you need to select “engrave.”

Thanks for the quick response! So there is no way to just take the inverse of the outline and score that? I found that I get better text on leather results when using the score function vs Engrave

No, score will just “score” the outline of text. You can score the outline, then engrave the fill.

if you truly want to score text, and you’re not meaning an outline of the letters, then your text would have to be ‘filled’ with a crosshatch pattern of lines.

If you are just looking for letters as one scored line you have to find very specific fonts for that purpose or draw the text yourself.

Thank you everyone. I have to say, the GF Community is pretty awesome!
