What 's a Good Size Magnet for holding lightweight stuff down?

What are the other dimensions (besides 6mm thickness) of the magnets that you use?

I have a bunch of these for my milling machine, I plan on using them for laser fixturing.

you can turn the magnet “on and off”. it isn’t electric, just a lever that moves the magnet internally.
you can unscrew the upright post if you don’t need it

The one that came with my dial indicator is really strong!
I have adapted it for many uses from a holder for my phone video to a magnifying lens holder.
The articulating arms make it very versatile.

Just a warning to anyone unaware of the extreme danger with small powerful magnets, small children have died or suffered serious internal organ damage after swallowing magnets that then make their through the digestive tract, or become attracted to any other magnetic object the child may be playing with.

I used to keep them as desktoys and was shocked to read about the harm they can cause, much like button-cell batteries being ingested.

Since laser work should need very little holding force perhaps flexible strip magnets are more suitable. A long strip along the edge of a sheet should hold it flat.

I was thinking the same thing, the real estate agent’s football schedule on the fridge is big enough to cut into inch wide strips.

Got a roll of that magnet strip…you guys just saved me some bucks!

Can somebody report back on how well the strip stuff works? Some of it even has trouble with textured fridge surfaces.

I’m considering ordering a roll of this stuff, personally. It could come in handy in a number of artsy-fartsy ways, although apparently you have to watch out for cheap brands with weak magnetics on the thin sheet materials.

magnum is a good brand for mag sheet. That’s what I use for vehicle magnets that have to stay on at highway speeds.

Is that laser cutable?

Yep, at least according to other laser cutter manufacturers

plus $13.27 shipping. Sheesh!

For reasons that are too complicated to go into here, most of that magnetic-sheet material is magnetized in stripes of alternating N/S domains. Doesn’t generally affect its grip, but does mean you can also sometimes use it as part of a position sensor…

Depends on the material you’re trying to hold flat. For paper, sure. Wood or bowed plastic or trying to flatten leather or thicker textiles (like getting a consistent flattened section of a sneaker or sport shoe) needs more strength than a thin magnet has. Of course you can put more (e.g. long strip) but that makes a larger “don’t laser here” area on the material. The neos only require a dime or nickel sized thin magnet to hold most things flat even if slightly bowed.

I don’t recall the last time I said “I wish I had less power”. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Yeah, I saw that too. This is why I hate Amazon.COM and Amazon.CA. The item description says, “Free shipping!” - until you actually order it, and the shipping winds up being more than the item itself!

I cancelled the purchase, too. :persevere:

I would advise also being careful letting them snap together OUTSIDE of the GF, as I just did. They popped together, jumped out of my hand, rolled under the GF and hopped up underneath it, attached to the metal through the plastic outer casing. ULTIMATE FACE PALM.

I have some 32mm N54 ‘coin’ magnets which have enough force to hold the medium plywood, but for things like paper and leather, I’ve had pretty good luck with these. I had a box laying around for a different project, and of course lasering nametags is an obvious application.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that dose this.
I also pull out magnets out of old hard drives.
