Underlayment is one of the worst materials to use. It’s one of the lowest quality of plywood you can get and filled with all kinds of unknown materials, inconsistent not only from one sheet to the next but even on the same sheet.

It’s designed to provide a flat surface for tile and such.

You can usually get 4x8 sheets and with four cuts at 19" gives you 5 - 48 x 19 inch sheets. I would look for Revolution Plywood as while it has some bad spots they are less problematic than usual and way easier to cut. And near the bottom in terms of cost.

I never had an issue until yesterday. I usually use the thick draftboard setting and it cuts like butter. I compared the MDFs. They were different colors. I ended up going back to Home Depot with sample of my MDF that cuts well with the proofgrade settings & I tried matching the color with a new sheet. Cuts beautifully. Darker MDF is a difficult cut on the glowforge. The lighter MDF sheets cut much better and easier!!

Not sure why you dug up a thread from over two years ago, but I have had sheets of store-bought MDF that cut fine from one side, but not the other. It’s not intended to be a perfect, consistent product for laser cutting.

These settings worked perfectly for me! I had some pretty detailed cuts as well!
