2 days engraving, pro tips and settings helpfulness And awesome trick with an iPad

ok silly question is there a place you type in the kerf or if not do you add it to your design or subtract and any tutorials on this?

No. At this time, kerf adjustment has to be made in the design file.

The Glowforge cuts down the center of the vector path. If you have Illustrator, you can see what the actual path is by viewing outline mode. Since it cuts right down the path, you would offset the path by half the kerf width of the material you’re using.

so other question is there an easy way to add that little bit into an already made file in illustrator?

I use Inkscape, and there is an extension for tabbed box maker. It has a place to enter the kerf value.

To add on to the iPad trick (+1 for the ingenuity) - if you have an image on your screen you can take a screenshot by pressing home and the sleep button at the same time. The screenshots are dropped into your photo album and you can email them out to your computer. Depending on what you’re doing it can give you much higher resolution than the GF camera trace.

For Android that’s Power & Down Volume and hold for a few seconds until the screen does a schwoop. They’re in the Downoad|Images|Screenshots folder.

I thought of that too but I wanted something with no editing and rasterizing the trace image is nice for just clicking cut areas too.

You sure got straight to work! I’m impressed with the diversity of your first handful of projects. Can’t wait to see what other tricks you discover.

I just realized that the dog tags on my back pack and my suitcases are for a house I lived in about 5 years ago! Would you mind sharing the link to the dog tags you bought? (since we know they engrave nicely) Please!

Lots to choose from on Amazon.
I did two packs of these and they worked fine.
Look around a little and can probably find them anodized all one shade.

thanks! these will be great.

WOW! That is some fantastic work!

For anodized dog tags we use a guy that has both a web store and on ebay. We used these tags for our Vision rotary engraver. Always had a great experience with both service and the products that he sells. https://www.chewbarka.com
