3d Modeling in VR

I had created a topic a long while back about wanting to design in VR. And while, I haven’t found anything like Inkskape or Illustrator, there is this one I came across for modeling more for 3D printing.

You should check out my friend’s tumblr. He works for ILM and does a lot of modelling in VR for 3d printing. He gets to use some serious 3D printers!

I have a few VR toys and tried some basic VR modelling. It’s…difficult, if you aren’t already good at sculpting, as that’s basically what you’re doing.

Even as a sculptor modeling in vr is pretty gimmicky right now. VR just isn’t super precise yet, thats why even the “good” stuff is usually really blobby. Bringing 3d objects into VR on the other hand for review is amazing.

As a sculptor for many years, I’ve found the best digital sculpting tool is ZBrush using the “pen” on my tablet. It works very much like clay in the digital realm with your “pen” being your tool. Not had a great deal of interest in the virtual space manipulation stuff – if I want to work with my hands, I want the tactile feel and weight of clay for real… :relaxed:

For sure, and I mean no surprises there as it was designed for exactly that. What I tell people who ask is I put them in tilt brush and say draw a straight line. Now you understand why modelling in VR is silly. ha.
