I don’t know why it is so satisfying to leave the bear minimum but it is.
Ooh, case of 10 spools out for delivery, and I just discovered Rapid+TCT is in Boston NEXT WEEK! I’ve never been able to go before, so excited. Ironically I am going to the Rocky Mountain Rep Rap Festival on Friday out in CO (before I knew about Rapid, but I’ll get to see my son who lives out there so good either way).
Ooh, that’s fun.
It looks like a blast! Some of those room setups look awesome.
I’m most fascinated that someone made $100,000 (and counting) selling STL files on Kickstarter.
$40 for the files and access to the libraries make sense to a lot of people (1700+) I guess!
A bunch of commercial licenses were sold to, so expect to see a printed version available by the end of the year ![]()
HELP! What do you do with the smaller TPU spools? I ordered a set of 8 colors (Sunlu) off Amazon, but they are only .25kg, not the 1k like my other filaments, so the spools are much narrower and smaller than the standard spools. I’m not sure how they’ll fit in the AMS, or if I should even use them in the AMS. I don’t want to open them until I know what to do. Is there an adapter you printed out from Makerworld (and if so, which one worked best for you?), or do you use the external spool holder?
And I know that TPU is much more susceptible to moisture, so is that a problem if using the external holder? I thought I read somewhere that because of the flexibility of TPU, it’s not a good idea to mix colors because of the chances of it blobbing up in the nozzle.
I haven’t had any problems printing with the PLA, PLA+, HS PETG, or reg PETG, but the TPU scares me for some reason. I did buy a Sunlu filament dryer, so I know I would use that before I even used the TPU, and the spools would be stored in the cereal boxes with desiccant when not in use. Advice please! Thanks.
You can print a full size spool that adapts the smaller spool for the AMS or you can run a single color and avoid using the AMS.
The only other option is to respool the smaller spoils onto a larger one.
When you are looking for the larger spool that will hold the sunlu spools do a search for sunlu spool adapter. I purchased a set of them too. It is a nice deal to be able to try a bunch of different types and colors of filaments but I was always worried about running out mid print.
The nice thing about the Bambu Labs printers is that you can just load more filament when a spool runs out. That doesn’t mean you’ll have the same color, but you can finish a print if you want to. BTW - the printer/AMS won’t generally read the color information or accept a manual update to color in this situation. That all happens after the print is finished.
Thanks @hansepe. I was more worried that if I used the external spool, it would cause moisture problems. As it is, I had started a print last night of an egg holder to use for my hard boiled eggs in the fridge, using PETG, which had been in the AMS. It got halfway through and started stringing. I love that printer stopped automatically, but it was beyond fixing the print and I had to toss that job away. I have a new spool that I’ll put in the dryer first and try again. Such a waste of filament.
They do say you need to be sure it’s the same type of filament for it to automatically switch to another spool if you run out, and that they spools should be in the 1st and 2nd slots. I did have mine prepared that way (although 2 different colors - ordering more filament today!!), but then it garbled up and I need to start it again anyway. Oh well.
@davidgal2 - I’ll look specifically for the Sunlu spool adapter.
I generally print TPU straight out of my drier while it is running! But I also print with the harder TPUs usually (98A or harder). I didn’t have a great experience with 95A. It looked awful (probably because it became to humid) and failed several prints.
Ooh, and that’s what I have - 95A. Since I haven’t hooked my dryer up yet, I’ll have to see how to run it from that to the printer. Didn’t know you could do that! That would ease my mind.
yes. For example PLA and PETG don’t bond (and are often used as support materials for each other because of that).
You can mix basic and matte colors as long as they are PLA (or PETG) but don’t change the type of filament.
I didn’t know that they wouldn’t bond. I really love this forum.![]()
I just saw on FB yesterday that Hobby Lobby carries some 3D filament and accessories. We were doing some running around and stopped to see if our local store carried it. They had quite a bit of filament, mostly PLA and PLA+, and a couple sets of needle files, and just one deburring tool set. The prices ranged from $12.99 to $21.99 for the filament, depending on type and color. One guy was there getting some filament, and I asked him how good it was. He said he had a P1S and hadn’t had much problem with it, but said it seemed to like a cooler heat bed, between 55-65 deg. He said he’d done a project a little hotter than that, and when he went to pull it off, it was more rubbery. Think I’ll stick with buying from Amazon or Bambu.
I mostly stick to Amazon just for the convenience. I generally spend between $12 to $18 for PLA or PETG (depending on color). But, I have gone up to $25 for the perfect color and hardness of TPU I am looking for. I love shiny silver TPU 98A or harder. I even made my son a Mandalorian costume last Halloween with it!
For some reason I have been stuck on Star Wars helmets recently…
Awesome. And I love your Star Wars helmets!
I do love ordering from Amazon as well. But Bambu delivers to my door, whereas Amazon always goes to our neighbor’s driveway and I have to go across the yard to get it. Doesn’t sound like much, but our neighbors are on a totally different street than our address, and Amazon just can’t seem to get it right. Although a few actually read the “added delivery instructions” and make it up our drive - maybe 1 in 20 drivers. And it does no good to tell them, because they never seem to have the same driver. I’ve been sticking with the Sunlu brand on Amazon, although the guy I talked with at Hobby Lobby said the eSun brand is good too.
That’s awesome! How many hours to print the helmet, do you recall? Wait - did you design the helmet, purchase the file online or find it free? I need to start thinking about more things I can make. I need more hours in the day.
