3d printing hobby

Yeah we have really only used PLA but we have always gotten the hardened steel ones (when that is available as an option, I’m not sure if the 0.2 is available)

PLA is very versatile but it is time for you to branch out. Get some PETG next as it almost as friendly as PLA and then branch out from there.

Getting this tool changer is making me want to try all the filiments that might possibly apply.

Time to branch out? lol I used the word “we” loosely. I haven’t even used a 3D printer before. My husband is the only one who’s used ours. The Bambu barely has any hours on it. He later got a resin printer (a whole different topic though). The Bambu was not working right and I decided to figure out what was going on and try to fix it and start using it (because there are things I want to make).

So PLA is fine for now. Give me a while, though. lol

PLA is much maligned by people. Unless you have a special need for something with specific use properties PLA will do. I use it for most things.

Okay, as always, progress at the rate you are comfortable with. I’m just trying to encourage you as I know you can do a lot of cool things from what we see here.

Y’all are making me want a 3D printer. I should’ve bought our daughter’s when she closed her business. But at this point I don’t have the money to buy one. Someday….

My Bambu Labs P2S arrived yesterday and i have already printed the little boat and a poop catcher. Very impressed with the packing and the quality of the machine. Feels wrong not watching it the entire time it prints. So far everything is going well.

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: I have the Snapmaker U1 and love the 4-head changer. Multicolor prints are great but it’s really good for multi material printing. Using PLA with PETG supports (or vice versa) makes removing supports a piece of cake since the two materials really don’t bond well together.

And different softness TPUs so different parts of the model have different flexibility. A ton of options.

I’ve found a bit of a middle ground in that now I check the video feed every few minutes, but don’t bother actually going out into the garage until the print is done.

Incidentally, if you intend to use the drying function of the AMS 2 Pro, AND you also think you’ll want those extra desiccant boxes that enhance drying performance, print those boxes out of PETG. PLA will deform in the drying heat, and may let desiccant escape (which is bad for the mechanicals).

Also, beware the temptation to buy huge loads of filament when it’s on sale – then you gotta store it all somewhere safe! (safe for the filament, I mean).

There’s always going to be another sale, so wait if you can (I speak from experience here, ha).

Thanks for suggestions. I am very new to this and just trying to find my way. So far its been great.

I may or may not be guilty of this too, but there is no such thing as too much filament!

This is something that doesn’t get talked about enough. I use this method too.

Ok. I replaced the extruder. I’ve been fighting with the machine because it wanted to use the AMS and I didn’t even have the AMS connected. Finally, I had to download Bambu Studio instead of using the internal file on the machine because that’s the only thing that worked to tell it to use the spool. I’ve been working on all of this for the entirety of the Avs game and just barely got the print started. (So about 1 hr 45 min I guess.) ugh. Please cross your fingers and toes and say a prayer for me so I don’t give up on this machine. lol

Update: Yay!

My obligatory first print.

The U1’s obligatory first print is a cute 4 color dragon to test/demonstrate the multi head capabilities.

Benchy for the win! Good work.

I think yins motivated me to use my printer more, so I designed a holder for paper cups and lids.

Hopefully in about 6 hours I’ll have the real thing.

:tada:

I’ve seen so many pictures of that little boat over the years

Yeah, but benchy is so cute! And given all I had to overcome to make it, I may keep it for a while. Lol

Maybe I’ll try to keep a folder of photos of 3d printed projects I made. Like a social story for adults. To remind me wheni don’t feel very confident about something, I can still do it! For whatever reason it feels harder to me than Glowforge printing..I guess because of the 3rd dimensional component. I had already worked with illustrator before and other software not I’ve never used 3d software. My son just did the credentialing in his engineering class so if he can do it, I can do it! (He and I think a lot alike too, so I’m sure I can easily master it.)

I use to hate Fusion 360 coming from the Adobe world, but have kept at it for years just watching youtube if I wanted to learn anything new. If you go down the Fusion 360 route, I’d be happy to help if you ever need it.

Currently modeling a laser cut dino cage for 3d printed knit dinosaurs to give out as dino-mite valentines day valentines.
