I installed a houseful of cabinet door handles and drawer pulls last month. Here’s the jig I made out of draftboard and goofgrade ply:

I’m always telling people (including myself) if you need to drill two holes, print a paper template, if you need to do it more than twice, make a jig.

You nailed that down with this example.
