I use sharpies also but for this project I used paint markers that I picked up at a local Walmart so I could use silver and gold for the lettering.

When you adjust the brightness and the contrast which direction do you go with it? Do you make it a little darker or lighter?
For this project I made it darker so the vet would stand out. Once I was good with the vet. Then I used gimp’s dodge/burn tool on the back ground until I was satisfied. Hope this helps.

Did you invert the image?
No I did not. Keep adjusting the sharpness,brightness and so on till I got it where I wanted it.
