A Memory Hole

A friend’s mother passed at the beginning of Covid and she’s having a celebration of life for her this weekend. She asked me if I could make a box for the 4x6 cards everyone is to write their memory of Barb on. I already had parts for some boxes cut (different purpose, correct size, that is not my kind of luck, but okay.) The sides and bottoms of the box are three layers. Inside layer is 1/4" butternut and the middle and outer layer are cheap 1/4" (more like 3/16") plywood. I had a bunch of burled walnut veneer leftover from a different project for the outside and lid. I’m not sure what type of wood the letters are. Birds eye maple veneer maybe? A few more coats of satin rub-on poly applied to the lid and it’s done.

Nice job of it and a pretty need ideal to keep memories alive and where you and actually find them.

And an under construction pic, in case anyone needs a visual of the three layers, veneer over thing.

When reading the description, I was like “no way that box is ply, it looks like solid burled walnut!” The in-progress pic really shows off what an amazing job you have done to create this handmade heirloom :heart_eyes_cat:

Lovely work, and what a neat thing for your friend to do. I kept looking at the first photo for evidence of veneer and couldn’t see it. Thanks for the “under construction” photo.
