One of my favorite new shows is Ashoka on Disney plus. Made this action figure diorama for my friend. I used 1/8 cardboard settings.
WOW @neferene1! How did you do that? I love how your diorama really captures the mood.
I love the passion and artistic abilities of the members of this forum.
Would you please care to share details of your technique?
What is the substrate used? and how did you give it relief and texture?
How did you achieve such depth in the paint job?
This is awesome!!
First off thanks.
-
it’s just insulation foam core from Home Depot. I have great ventilation and wear a respirator when I’m using it. Even though it gives off very very low oder.
-
draw lines and circles as best I can from Ashoka episode #1 in Inkscape.
-
used 1/8 th cardboard setting in Glowforge. It’s about a 6-9 minute score.
-
use respirator again and then use blow dryer to harden scored areas on foam core so that it doesn’t melt when I spray paint it black.
-
spray paint black to get into scored crevices
-
spray paint at an angle with brown or grey, but don’t get it into crevices.
-
dry brush technique with light grey or white very lightly
-
dry brush with medium dark grey and medium dark brown
That’s it.
Thank you.
So you´re telling me there was no texture added and it´s all optical ilussion of the paint technique.
That even makes it more astounding, because it looks like it has relief and texture.
Thank you very much for sharing.
Well done. Spot on!
The spray paint melts the foam a little. I forgot to harden it with the heat gun/ or blow dryer. It would have made the same effect, but I would not have had to wait 1 hour between layers of paint had I hardened it first. I had to rely on the first coat of black spray paint to be my hardener and tread lightly on the layers of paint. I volunteer at a prop shop, so that’s where I learned how to make foam look real. Here is a better example of what can be accomplished with foam and dry brushing with paint. ( no Glowforge in these pics)
Aww thanks!
Thanks so much!
That looks spectacular! We don’t have Disney+ anymore (we did, but when we bundled it through Hulu, Disney said they don’t support our particular Roku TV and we couldn’t get it to load at all, so we dropped it. Then we couldn’t get it back through Verizon again. ) so I didn’t get to watch Season 3 of the Mandalorian or any of the new stuff.
Your technique is great, and thank you for sharing the steps. And what things you learned helping make props! Awesome!
Anytime. Hope you get Disney again.
That looks amazing!!
Aww thanks!
Thank you for sharing that technique!
Always. No problem.
Very nice work! Thank you for sharing your technique! You never know what project we’ll need to be involved in next!
Thank you very much.
You know you I love me some Star wars anything. Of course I’m watching the new ahsoka show, but this diorama is pretty awesome. Nicely done.
Outstanding! And thanks for sharing your process.
