Agreed.

I haven’t tried it but I think you can dilute acetone with water to make it less agressive and dip ABS prints in that to smooth them.

There was a 3D printer maker at the most recent SIGGRAPH showing off several prints using the Polysmooth filament that looked really great. The interesting part is they said they weren’t using the Polysher at all, either they left the prints alone or just gave them a quick dip in drug store variety isopropyl alcohol.

Polysmooth is about double the cost is ABS or PLA but the easier and safer post processing might make it worth it for me. (most of my 3D printing is done in an office environment where speed is critical)
