This time i covered the entire tile with painters tape before engraving. The laser burned the tape and the adhesive into the tile in the areas it engraved out. I scrubbed all the small bits of tape off under hot running water with a dish scrubbie and the color stayed.

Interesting! What was the original color of the tape?
and … what were your settings? 
Was yellow painters tape, and i engraved full power 400 speed.
Not sure if different colors of tape will matter, i don’t have another color to try right now.
