Seatbelt pretensioners use something similar in the event of a car crash. Most use pyrotechnics, which explodes, driving a piston upwards and then drives a gear which retracts the seat belt. They are wired generally along with the air bag - deceleration, explosion, seatbelt retracts and then air bag deploys.
Anyone else thinking “massively rigid CNC components”? Sans pyrotechnics of course.
