I’ve engraved QR code’s on anodized aluminum. They work fine. On bare / untreated surfaces you’ll need a catalyst of some kind.
Search for cermark.

Yeah that will work fine (if the metal is highly polished that could be a problem for some scanners) but then I would recommend doing the inverse barcode (i.e. put it on a larger black background to help the scanner see less reflection)
