The pastor at our church is retiring soon, and he asked me to engrave a relay baton for him to pass on to the next lead pastor. I told him I could make a stand for it also.
The batons engraved beautifully! Here was the photo of the first test.
My plan was to mask and paint the engraving if it didn’t look good, but it looked amazing from the start.
The stand was too tall to begin with, but after a few iterations I had what I wanted. I used Thick Green-Glass Acrylic for the final product because I think it just looks amazing.
I also realized that this “Baton Stand” could be used as a “Lightsaber Stand”! So I may be making more for that purpose… (different engravings of course)
Great project @bill.m.davis. Love both the engraving and the stand.
Just out of curiosity, what is the baton made of? Looks like anodized aluminium.
Is it a normal relay race baton, or is it a custom turned one of a kind piece?
I engraved some relay batons a few years ago while I was helping coach the local high school track team. Mine turned out okay, but not nearly this impressive. Seeing your results has inspired me to go back and experiment a bit more.
The nice part about anodised aluminium is it’s pretty standardized across the industry. Use the default setting and if you’re not happy, do not move anything close the lid and run it again.
There’s zero chance your accidently going to cut through.
I have actually tried to print on some anodized aluminum that did not work out like the others. The engraves are usually bright silver, but the ones I could not get right were just dull grey (they were supposedly black anodized.) I suspect they actually were not pure aluminum as claimed.
