I wonder how it would look with some wooden spacers/washers to offset an outer ring of slats so there is indirect lighting on the slats. Lots of potential with this design.

That sounds like something that my wife would notice. I would have never seen the curtains in the background, only the craftsmanship of your lamp. It looks great!
