With all my projects I try to use only recycled, used, trashed, or otherwise discarded stuff. The birds are primarily made from plastic sheets found inside TV and monitor screens and rigid foam insulation used in walls and ceilings. I design the feathers and cut them on the Glowforge. (The material is safe to cut. I have been using it for years. I vent outside) They are then shaped with a small heat gun, painted and then glued on the body (foam). For a while I was counting the feathers and the Snowy Owl had 1006. Probably 500 of them were on the face! Here are a few of my latest birds with some ugly in process pictures. Have fun deciphering what’s going on. I have an instagram account for more background: thinking_out_of_context
Speechless.. wow..
Edited: I thought about this. My Glowforge is an essential tool, like a screwdriver or scissors. So everything I want to do, if I can use that tool, I will. I can’t imagine a life without it.
So anything I need to do, if the laser can “fix” or create it, I’ll use it. So using it to enhance anything - in this case, creative inspiration - is delightful.
That is incredible, and difficult looking; it must take an amazing passion to complete all those!
Ridiculously incredible! ![]()
One problem with this forum software is it has “like” and sometimes “like” is so inadequate. Exquisite!
I am amazed at the amount of detail and the amount of time to complete a single bird sculpture. The amount of detail is amazing. They all look very realistic too. Thank you for sharing.
Stunning!
These are unbelieiveably amazing…..as are you for thinking up such an incredible way to re-use materials. I particularly love the raptors…and those ravens are just the best. Thank you for sharing your work.
Your detail is incredible! You must have very steady hands ![]()
I was just reading an article about a single company in the northeast US (MA? VT?) Who makes all the decoys used by scientists to convince birds to return to abandoned nesting grounds. I feel like yours are even more realistic, and the fact that they’re made of recycled materials, even better!
I’m absolutely in love with the ravens in flight ![]()

Thank you!
A lot of false starts and the beauty of the foam is I can just carve it some more, or glue more foam where needed, or cut off the head to reposition it!
I had a lot of fun with the ravens. For the hanging ones it was a challenge to figure out how to get it just right. The one with the white wood face, that’s the Three Eyed Raven and Weeping Tree from Game of Thrones.
Thank you so much!
Thanks!!!
Thank you! They are time consuming, about 150-180 hours, but I am getting faster as I learn more about how wings work!
Reusing materials is the challenge. Wouldn’t be nearly as much fun if I just bought everything I needed. I love the ravens, too. It’s fun to see if I can get a personality out of them.
Wow! Now that is project! I will wait on that coaster post. Very nice job!! Beautiful!
Fabulous! Thank you for sharing your art.
Now that’s what I call up cycling!
I can’t even wrap my mind around this being possible! Truly incredible work … art at it’s finest.
