Black Tile Coasters from Michaels

Found some 4” (100mm) black ceramic coasters on sale at Michaels:

German compass rose:

Moopsy from ST: Lower Decks:

Blasted away at very high power and speed. Very happy with the crisp engraving.

Indeed, very crisp!

Really like the compass one. Maybe because it’s more detailed, it really makes the engraving stand out.

I like the compass one as well. It looks rich in it’s engraving

Love the bright creamy white that’s under the black! Great find.

but why O instead of E?

he said German so I’ll guess the German word for east starts with an O?

I was wondering if it was Spanish, but they’d be N, S, O, E.

Nice! I have these as well. Street maps look fantastic.

I will say though I tried an experiment. I did one coaster map engraving with three passes at 270 (I wanted to see the depth), and another with eight passes and a higher LPI (811 or something).

I noticed on the second and third pass that the grey became a lighter color, but after that it didn’t change and it really didn’t seem to engrave that much further down - despite my amping up the power a little.

The tile with three passes is cleaner than the tile with eight.

I also took some blue water-soluble ‘glass paint’ and mixed it in a little water, dabbed it all over, and then wiped the paint off the black parts (actually, I washed it off). It looked pretty cool, though I do like the plain look better.

They make great coasters as is. they look good wet and dry quickly. I’d like to try one sealed in resin, though, just to experiment…
