When we were in Hawaii, I used to turn pens out ofā€¦wait for itā€¦koa. It makes the most beautiful pens and turning pens is almost a zen experience. Just you and the lathe. A lot like riding a motorcycle.

Is that tricky to do on a medium sized lathe? I mostly do small bowls so farā€¦

Not really, as long as you can bring the tail stock close enuf to hold the mandrel, abou 10-12ā€.

Great idea to make your own calipers for your bowls. Iā€™ve never tried turning, but, love the look of the bowls and pens Iā€™ve seen.

Iā€™m working on a more refined designā€¦ so far Iā€™m not thrilled with the handle designs Iā€™ve come up with, but Iā€™ll post something when Iā€™m happier.
