Cardboard (mostly) Proton Pack!

I love using my GF to make things! I am a member of the Alberta Ghostbusters. We raise money for the children’s hospitals in Alberta. This year, we got invited to walk in the pride parade in Edmonton, AB. A number of our members decided to go in coloured jumpsuits to make a rainbow. I was green. I have a modified Haslab proton pack, but I had recently come across a video of a guy making one out of cardboard. I decided it would be fun to make one and make it brightly coloured for the parade. Bonus - it weighs about 6 pounds! So it was much lighter than my regular pack.

Most of the structure of the pack is made from a combination of corrugated cardboard, light chipboard and medium chipboard. Only the motherboard and the outer piece of the synchronous generator were too big to cut on the GF. All of the tubes are cardboard tubes of various sizes I had in my craft hoard. I did use various thicknesses of plywood for some of the small pieces. I made the Dale resistors out of plywood and chipboard. And the “ladder” was made of ply as well. I ended up 3D printing the crank knob on the pack and some of the knobs on the wand because I ran out of time.

The wand has static lights.

The pack has animated lights for the cyclotron and power cell…but no sound. Maybe in the future. I used addressable LEDs and coded them in Bekonix. Unfortunately the video file is too big to upload here.

I’ll drop a few in-progress shots below but you can also see all of them on my FB page if you are so inclined. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/15qyM5Snds/

Shout out to Wizardry Workshop - I used his templates (though I modified some) and his videos to aid me in making this. https://wizardryworkshop.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@wizardryworkshop

Love the progress pictures. Did you find a rainbow control cable, or paint that too?

There are a few makers that make ribbon cables for proton packs (GB1 and GB2 style) but they are pricey (because of how they are made) and I was trying to make this as cheaply as possible. So I just ordered a 50 pin ribbon cable on Amazon.
