Christmas in August

Finally finished a commission for seven customized nativity puzzles.

Pretty simple as a single layer design, but requirement that they be 3/4" thick required three separate gluing and engraving jigs.

Glad they’re done!

A great feeling to have that project over and done with. Curious…why did they want them so thick…so they’d be more stable at free-standing?

Exactly. They’re meant to be shelf or table sitters.

Nice! Could you share
A pic of your gluing jig?

They look good, and it’s always so nice to wrap up a project!

Sure. Here are the two gluing jigs…

Note the 1/2" dowels used to ensure all three layers of thick draftboard are perfectly aligned.

Here’s the engraving jig in place on the bed of my Glowforge…

The bottom layer is a pine board held in place with magnets along the sides with blue tape on its top. The jig itself is two pieces of thick DB with spacers to bring the top even to the workpieces and is glued to the blue tape with CA glue.

To achieve alignment with the puzzle pieces, the jig was installed, then engraved with the alignment marks and centerpoint coordinates, just in case I couldn’t read the reminder written on the blue tape.

Final step was to cut the outline (with fingerhole reliefs), before moving on to the seven puzzles.
