Cow Horn Engraving and Cutting

Has anyone ever used their GF to cut or engrave a horn from an animal??
My friend works with a group in Uganda that takes cow horns and melts them into bowls and plates (photo attached). We’re trying to figure out if we can GF them, but I’m nervous to just start lasering away without research! Thanks!!

Several people have done bone. Horns are basically just hair so it should laser okay but will most likely really smell awful. Definitely make sure your venting is sealed and directed outside.

And please let us know how it works out…those bowls are very pretty, and I didn’t know that horn melts like that!

File that under ‘things I never thought I would learn from a laser group’.

Lasered bone smells mostly like burnt hair to me, always thought that was odd.

Another fun fact – finger- and toenails are the same.

Hair, fingernails, or Rhino horn, same stuff - keratin, a hard protein.
I had no idea it could be melted… :no_mouth:
