If they can’t decipher how to remove the handle they are cut off.

I saw this stein from Germany that had holes all around the side of the rim about a half inch below the top, and other holes on the top edge (it was double-walled porcelain) so you couldn’t tip it to drink. There was another hole in the stein handle that you plug with your thumb and a certain one on the top that you suck on.

When you turned it up for a swallow and got wet - time to go home.

the Germans have so many clever ways to drink! I went to a work dinner once where the restaurant had famous singing liquor bottles that would whistle tunes as they poured.

It’s been over 10 years so my memory is a little fuzzy but I think it was this place, the singing bottles came out at the end of a rather expensive 20 person private dinner.

You can get them on eBay (musical liquor pourer). A B&B we stayed at in the Mosel valley had one.
