Dad perks (another stock)

This is my dad’s stock, he wanted a duck logo and he wanted a grip pattern too. (He calls it the perks of being a father since I own a laser lol) I had him tape off the pattern style he wanted and custom drew it up in photoshop then added it on both sides to engrave. It turned out amazing. Gonna get some of the extra burn off but overall it turned out pretty cool.

So great! My son in law had asked me to laser on a stock for his son right after I got my laser. I shied away from it since I was so new. I ‘might’ give it a whirl now. I recently got my great grandfather’s gun. I considered engraving the ‘story’ behind it in the gun so future generations will have the info…might need to give it a whirl.

That turned out very well. I wouldn’t clean that duck logo up anymore. It looks amazing the way it is now.

That looks amazing! I love seeing people do this for family! As an FFL, please know that family members who ask you to this is ok, but if one of your clients ask, be sure to check your state requirements and the ATF - would hate to have them visit you. There is a gunsmitthing FFL for people who engrave various parts of the guns, we are waiting for that to get approved and then will be doing this more and more!

Just for personal use.

It’s not the use but the relationship of the requestor that drives the need for an FFL. You can do it for family but not a friend even if both are asking for a personal firearm. You’re okay because it’s family but if a friend sees it and asks you to do one for them, FFL regs apply. The only way around that is for rifles where the barrel and action are removed and you’re only working on the bare stock.

Yes I know this. Thank you. I know a gun shop owner locally who has FFL and went into great detail about it many times with him and others. Just didn’t want to get into it that deep since it seems to come up each time I make it for my father only who starts the engraving on his own after I help design it so left a vague response. I appreciate the information. I will never sell or modify a serialized part for anyone but my immediate family and they will have to do the engraving themselves.

He certainly knows how to pull strings. A most definitive useful perk.

Both jobs came out amazingly great!
I personally think the extra burn gives it contrast and makes the stock more interesting.

In any case Congratulations @wenning08!

Great job! How did you handle the getting the Glowforge to work on the curved surface of the gun stock? Can you share any tips?

Just raise it up to focus height and make sure it’s level mostly all the way across in the area your engraving by stacking stuff under it then hit engrave. If some areas a slightly curved the beam unusual can still hit it. I use full power usually but if it curves to much it can taper off

Really great engraving. You could start a successful side hustle business. Hit the gun range and show them what you can do.
