This is for discussion of May 2025 Update
I do remember this, I just wouldn’t have guessed it was more than 2 years ago! It doesn’t feel like MC has been available that long, but I’d be wrong
I love that our software continues to get better even 8 mumble years after I got my machine!
I love to see continuing improvement to Magic Canvas as I am one of the less artsy people here.
Something I and I know others would love once they saw it is other inputs to it other than the keyboard.
I think it’s powers would be multiplied if we could start with “based on my drawing in cat.svg” or “make it the size of the material in the GF”.
As always, this seems trivial to add as a user but I have to acknowledge that it might be a hard nut to crack.
I am seeing huge pushback against those who use AI in all it’s many flavors. I have kept pointing out that it is a tool that allows good or evil depending on the goals of the user, but that I do a great many tries to get near what I want.
One thing I have noticed is that if there is not much variation between one try and another it takes a lot longer to go where you are looking to go or not.
If there was a number (say 1 - 10 somewhere) that you could pick for the amount of differentness you are looking for it would really help.
To put it into perspective, remember that you are using magic canvas, a free(ish) image generator by a laser company.
If you want a fully featured image generator you should take a look at dedicated services where this is what they do. MidJourney, for example, has a tremendous amount of control over parameters to develop style profiles and dictate the amount of variation between runs, as well as having coherence levels far beyond what magic canvas can achieve.
Wishing that magic canvas isn’t doing all of the bells and whistles that state of the art image generators can do (and have been doing for over a year) is like being upset that your tv is a bad newspaper. They’re just not on the same level.
Magic canvas is like all Glowforge tools: focused on ease of use at the expense of depth. If the past seven ish years has taught us anything it’s that glowforge isn’t likely to change this model.
Magic Canvas has jumped around a lot from very much different to very similar. It should make it more Glowforge-ish to use this as an easier means vs special style profiles etc.
Again, it sounds like you have more specific needs and have outgrown it. My advice remains to find alternate solutions, just as you might go to Inkscape when the Glowforge tools are inevitably not advanced enough.
We all know Glowforge is very slow to roll out new features; you will likely be waiting for a long time if anything like you’re asking for ever gets developed.
Every once in awhile I try a prior Midjourney version just to see how things have progressed - putting a v3 version against a v7 prompt shows how far it’s come and how fast.
I’m loving the new Magic Canvas feature in Glowforge! I used it to design a pendant, and it was so cool that it automatically included a hole for the necklace—such a great time-saver! I am loving my Glowforge.
On another note: I’d love for the links within the thread to open in a new tab versus overwriting the current link. New tabs make it easier to continue viewing the original website. Thanks!
Good news, there is a user preference to do that!
To get there (on desktop):
- Click your user icon in the upper right
- Select Preferences
- Select Interface
- Enable “Open all external links in a new tab”
(BTW that previous post’s link was to Youtube in case anyone was worried about clicking it. It was a video about her getting her Glowforge and her first few jobs (I think. I skimmed. )
Oh wow! Thanks @evansd2! I had no idea I could customize that! You Rock! I’ve had my Glowforge less than a year and still learning! And yep. I use the Hyperlink feature to link a YouTube playlist of my Glowforge projects.
You’re welcome, and me neither! I got curious and tried to hack a solution (didn’t work) and then googled around and someone mentioned the preference.
Glowforge might be able to make it the default if they wanted to, not sure. While I am team “new tab”, there are probably a good number of people who like it as is.
(Check 12 tab groups with at least a half dozen current tabs in each)
What do you mean?
Great feedback!
I don’t know if we can do that - but I feel your pain. Great video!
Ooh I learned something today!
My friend Ethan just did a blog post about this:
