Dry erase chess board

My wife has been wanting me to teach her to play chess. I had been putting it off because I know within a couple of days she’ll be better than me . I have some chess pieces that are 60+ years old but the board was trash.

I wanted a 12"x12" board so I made a 7"x9" grid of 1.5" inch squares using the GFUI line function, with an extra square for 64 board pieces.

The material is dry erase board from Lowe’s. The back side is black giving me the contrasting pieces needed. I then cut a jig out of draft board that would align the pieces flush with the edge during glueing.

My only issue was one of laziness, I didn’t mask the white side because it was so easy to clean the smoke stain off, unfortunately it scorched the edges a bit, but it still came out ok.

I think I will make another out of wood or Corian.

Nice use of material!

When I’m too lazy to mask I put a single sheet of copy paper down under the material = no flashback
