CURIOUS if this is possible, Super new not sure. I’m looking for settings to engrave but noticed that I might need to remove the crumb tray to lay the Mortar and perhaps tape down in a way it won’t move. Is the 2inch rule for cutting or engraving too? Laying down its about 4inches so would need to find a way for it to not move, I AM totally not sure if I will do this but just wanted input.
Is there like SAFE TEST one can do with a general setting?
First off, welcome to the forum! You don’t say which machine you have, but I believe 2 inches is maximum height, with or without the crumb tray, regardless of model. There is no way you’ll fit something 4" in your Glowforge, even without the crumb tray. The only thing you’d be able to engrave on would be the pestle, and depending on the widest width of it (including the handle), you may have to remove the crumb tray prop it up with a jig. Just use the “search” button at the top for different jigs and how to create them; many are just made from cardboard.
A great tool for you to print out is the “No Math Focus Ruler” in the catalog. It makes it very easy to see if something will fit in your machine, or if you need to prop it up to get it in the proper zone for cutting or engraving. I use mine quite often, especially if I’m using non-proofgrade materials, like tiles or cutting boards. If you don’t have a Premium subscription, the cost is $1.49 to buy for one use or $2.49 unlimited uses. It’s definitely worth the cost if you need to buy it. There’s one for both the regular machines and for the Aura.
Looking forward to seeing your projects. This is the best community you’ll find, and we love to share what we do.
That was so helpful! I have a Pro HD and yes this Mortar has no handle so you’re right I might need to just do the handle and prop it up. My measurements might be off so I will cut out that ruler ASAP.
There are also several useful “tools” in the Free Design section, such as “honeycomb bed holddown pins” etc. It’s well worth just browsing that section to see what you like. Just remember that anything posted in the Free Design section is for personal use only, you can’t sell the designs or products made, but you can use them yourself or give as personal gifts.
Like I said earlier, you’ll love this forum. There’s a lot of expertise in here, with some of the members being some of the very first to get their machines. This is the place to come for any questions and to share.
Correct - use it with the crumb tray out. You want your materials to be within that checkmark area. That will make sure that your item doesn’t hit the head. And still use “set focus” on your item to print. Even is something is flat but around 1/2" thick (for engraving only), I remove the crumb tray and prop it up underneath, making sure my item is within the check mark area.
