Experiments with painted acrylic

We took the Bob Ross quote (there are no mistakes, just happy accidents) to heart when we tried an engrave on some woodgrain acrylic. The acrylic had the label on the back side, not front, so we engraved on the back (light colored item). We painted it and were amazed at how it turned out. It makes it appear 3D. You get an appearance of a bevel on the edge. We tried spraying the back of clear acrylic with silver paint and painting the other one. It appears 3D as well. We like this much better than working on “stinky” mirror acrylic. We have given several away and people comment that they thought someone had actually spent time painting the small print. They are blown away as to how easy this is to create. Love playing with the glowforge!

We made a bunch of different ones. This is something that could be done for parties or craft projects for any age. We have “craft ADD,” we get distracted by another fun project and don’t get back to the ones we liked. My other problem is that I don’t take good pictures and don’t take time to post things

Paint the back first with laser safe or wait until later. Use clear acrylic and mask before lasering. Engrave and cut. Just dab on paint and pull off mask. Ridiculously easy! We tried gold and white on back and didn’t like as much as silver. I think we used some kind of shiny silver too

It truly does have the look of 3-D. Thank you for posting.

It’s more obvious on the wood grain. It is clear on the back side, so it is perfect for this. We tried other, darker wood grain, but the lighter turned out better
