Filled Engraves on Glass

This looks like a variant of the Norton method, using titanium dioxide suspended in PVA glue to get black-filled engraves on clear glass.

i wonder why he feels like he needs to use “score” instead of just engraving? maybe he was going for speed doing an outline. but it seems like engrave would work just as well and be way more flexible on designs.

Yup! I have seen a lot of cases where TiO2 can be used in all sorts of ways. White paint made with TiO2 works as well. Only the part hit with the laser gets black.

I wonder if scoring glass with the Glowforge would make cutting pieces for stained glass easier. It has been years since I made any stained glass pieces.

No. It wouldn’t actually. It would be like running the glass cutter back and forth over the same line. You just ruin the glass cutter. :grimacing:

I watched this a few days ago.

Neat! TiO2 powder is cheap too - less than $20 for a 1lb bag, and you can definitely get smaller amounts.

The thing to find is tiles that have heavy
TiO2 glaze to make them extra white

@deirdrebeth where do you buy TiO2?

Almost any white paint will have TiO2. It is the primary thing that makes paint not clear. How much TiO2 varies alot. And if you are making your own paint or ceramic glaze they will sell you some to do that.

If you are in Miami and the old Ceramic League still exists you might stop by and they might be able to sell you an ounce of it. Tell them Hi! for me.

I bought a bag on Amazon a while ago.

I still have spent the time to get it right. I tried mixing it with alcohol to get a fine layer. I tried PVA glue and it was too thick. I wasn’t getting the results like I had seen and was wondering if a diode laser was better for the TiO2 method.

I just searched Amazon. They had the exact bag you see in the video as far as I could tell

Thanks @rbtdanforth, @bwente and @deirdrebeth for your replies, I just asumed it was a specialized chemical that would be sourced from chemical distribution outlets.
